Let This Soup Cure Thy Cold and Congestion

healing congestion and cold soupWhen Hippocrates came up with “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”, I am sure that it involved a bad case of cold and a soup. Cold? We’ve all been there. But, when it comes to soup, I’d like to suggest one with immediate and apparent healing properties. This truly magical broth is what I rely on when I happen to succumb to cold and flu. Not meant for kids or those that can’t take the heat, this fiery concoction will (in the true spirit of Hippocrates’ saying) give you nourishment, make you sweat, boost immunity, alleviate congestion and cough.

This soup has instant results (do have that tissue nearby) and it should be taken until symptoms go away. Another good thing about this soup is that, unlike over the counter medicines, there is no danger of overdose, unwanted chemicals or contraindications. Importantly for those felling miserable, this soup is quick and easy to make. Most of the ingredients are almost certainly in your pantry.

You will need:

2 onions

5 cups vegetable or chicken stock

1 cup chopped celeriac (celery root)

3-4 cloves garlic, peeled and pressed in garlic press

3-4 teaspoons finely grated ginger

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (go as far as you can take)

2 cups cooked noodles

1 teaspoon raw (not roasted) sesame oil

  1. Chop coarsely two onions. Don’t remove the skin. Add four cups of vegetable stock or chicken stock. Cook until the onion has softened. Strain and discard the onions.
  2. Add chopped celery root (celeriac) to the broth and boil until partially cooked.
  3. Add shredded ginger and cook for another ten minutes.
  4. Add pressed garlic and cayenne.
  5. Remove from stove, cover and let rest for five minutes.
  6. Just before serving mix in sesame oil and some noodles.
  7. Serve hot.

It is known that hot soup itself will do you good if you are suffering from cold and congestion. But bringing out the big guns –onion, garlic, ginger, celeriac, cayenne and sesame will make it an explosion of a good thing. All ingredients are well-known for their health benefits that go well beyond respiratory health.
